FAQ

What is a podiatrist?

The podiatrist is a health professional who’s presided by the Code des professions du Québec, the Loi sur la podiatrie and the Code de déontologie des podiatres. He can evaluate and treat the foot illnesses with different methods, such as chemical, pharmaceutical, surgical, mechanical or by manual therapy.

The podiatrist has the expertise and the skills to detect complications related to the foot and make the distinction between a podiatric pathology that he can treat, and a disease of the system, which is rather related to physician competence.

In addition to offering advice on foot health and hygiene, the podiatrist can prescribe and administrate certain drugs, complete minor surgeries and prescribe, produce or modify orthotics.

Is podiatry covered by Québec Health Insurance Plan (RAMQ)?

No. Podiatrists work in the private system and the costs are not covered by Medicare.

Does private insurance cover podiatric costs?

Most care are partly covered by many insurers. However, we recommend that you always confirm with your insurance company.

When and why should I see a podiatrist?

You suffer from foot, knee or lower back pain? We suggest you consult a podiatrist to determine if your feet can be the cause. The podiatrist will perform a biomechanical assessment and determine the best treatment plan. He can also treat ingrown toenails, plantar warts, nail fungus, corns and calluses.

At what age is it possible for children to consult?

You can consult from the age of one month. Consultation can be preventive or corrective. Some problems can be diagnosed at a young age and a correction during growth can sometimes lead to permanent corrections.

Do I need a prescription to see a podiatrist?

No, it is not necessary. Podiatrists can make a podiatric diagnostic and this diagnostic is necessary for reimbursement from your insurance company.

What's the difference between podiatrist and prosthetist orthotist?

The podiatrist diagnoses and treats injuries, deformities, defects, infections and foot injuries. He orders or makes appropriate orthopedic supports, administrates and prescribes medication, performs minor surgeries and conducts rehabilitation in feet. In Quebec, podiatrists must hold a doctorate in podiatric medicine and have a license issued by the Ordre des podiatres du Québec. The prosthetist orthotist designs, manufactures, adjusts, repairs and maintains prostheses (artificial limbs) and orthoses (orthoses or corsets) prescribed by a health care professional such as a physician or podiatrist. Holding a college degree in orthotics and prosthetic orthotics, he can be a member of the Association of orthotists, prosthetists and foot orthotist or the Association des technologues professionnels du Québec, but nothing require him to do so.
